Continuation of Lab 2 - Separation of Mixtures; today we analyze the original sample using paper chromatography. As the chromatograms develop, we also went over the free response questions (FRQs) from Friday's Unit 1 Exam, in a manner similar to how the AP readers assess the FRQ section.
Homework: Prepare for the start of the next unit on Atomic & Nuclear Structure by viewing the videos posted to EDpuzzle & reading sections 2.1-2.3 in the textbook. Students took their first Unit Exam today, consisting of both multiple choice and free response questions.
Today we began a miniscale distillation experiment where students' goal was to analyze/separate a 4 component mixture (water, ethanol, red & blue food coloring). Rather than utilizing a large distillation flask/condenser glassware setup, a simpler setup using only Erlenmeyer flasks and bent glass tubing was used. This decreased the time needed for clean-up and still yielded adequate results for analysis of the distillation process.
