Welcome to our new members and welcome (back) to our sophomore veterans!  We may be small in numbers this year, but I think we can do some mighty things this year.  Today's first meeting will cover some of the annual basics, but will also look at some cool light chemistry.
  • Officers - Need a President, Secretary & Treasurer.
  • Membership "Stuff"
    • 3 forms that need to be signed and returned by next Friday (Oct. 6) - Safety Agreement, Photo Release & Medical Form
    • $10 dues for club activities and supplies
  • Volunteers to help at the PTO Concession Stand for tomorrow night's home game against Loyalsock?
  • National Chemistry Week (theme: Chemistry Rocks!) is Oct. 22-28
    • Signs/Infographics to post around the school & on TVs
    • Fundraiser - Candy Sale? Chocolate rocks, Rock Candy, Pop-Rocks?
    • Any interest in participating in a live webinar event on Tuesday, 10/24 from 7-8pm?
    • Fall Festival (Friday Oct. 27) - Stand selling the aforementioned candy?  Display talking about the chemistry of rocks and minerals?

After having our Club Photo taken for the Yearbook, we talked a bit about the chemistry behind photography.  We watched the videos at right on the photosensitivity of certain compounds (like silver chloride) and then worked on making templates which we will "develop"...probably at our next club meeting (December 1)

  • Officers appointed - Due to small club size, only the offices of President (Blaine) and Treasurer (Ben) are filled at this point.
  • Club t-shirts - "Life is an Experiment" t-shirt iron-ones distributed; please make a shirt and wear it at the next club meeting (11/10) for our club yearbook photo
  • Halloween-theme - While partaking of candy corn, we learned a little bit about its chemistry. We also tried out hand at making fake skin using a modified ooblek recipe (and discussed non-Newtonion fluids in the process). Through trial and error, we found that microwaving the mixture for 20 sec on High (700W oven) produced a life-like/rubbery consistency that felt "real".
