Students finished their Candy Cane Ornaments today, as needed. Students were also introduced to the Polyatomic Ion Formula practice extra credit on Quizlet. Students used laboratory glassworking skills (cutting, fire polishing, bending) to make Candy Cane Ornaments.
Today we examined the first set of polyatomic ion formulas that we will focus on...the -ates & -oxides (as well as ammonium & cyanide). We talked about ways to remember the elements involved in each ion formula, and the number of oxygens, etc.
Building off of the Drawing Lewis Diagram video assignment posted to EDpuzzle, we completed both guided and independent practice with drawing Molecular Lewis Diagrams for both compounds and polyatomic ions.
We began learning about how electrons are systematically distributed within the atom using guidelines known as the Aufbau principle, Pauli Exclusion Principle & Hund's Rule. Through a POGIL activity, students learned how these 3 are applied to generate ground state orbital energy diagrams and electron configurations.
