Building off of last night's videos, we spotlighted the important contributions of Dobereiner, Newlands, Mendeleev & Moseley to the organization of elemental information into a useful format. Students began working on a 3 page packet, designed to give them a visual guide to the elements and the organization of the Periodic Table. This packet is to be completed for tomorrow.
Pre-Thanksgiving break labs & Tuesday's unit test were returned and discussed. This was followed with a video that summarized the development of the atomic concept (review of pre-Thanksgiving material) and linked it to the development of various ways to organize information about the elements (both known and at-the-time unknown elements) into a table format.
Students took their unit test on Atomic Structure & Development of Atomic Theory.
Light calculation quizzes were passed back and discussed. Whole class review for Tuesday's exam.
HW: Study! Students began the period with their 3 question quiz on calculations in the Atom unit...average atomic mass and working with the two light equations. The remaining time was then spent wrapping up each class's respective POGIL activity.
HW Begin/continue reviewing unit notes/packets/videos in preparation for Monday's review & Tuesday's Unit Test Pd. 8 - Complete question 17 in the POGIL packet and be ready to start class Monday with a discussion of this question Classes continued work on their respective POGIL activities. Pds. 1, 4 & 8 wrapped up Electron Energy & Light and began the activity on Coulombic Attraction. Pd. 2 began the POGIL on Electron Energy & Light.
HW Study for tomorrow's Atom Unit Calculations Quiz (average atomic mass & light equations) Pd. 2 - Be ready to discuss your answers to questions 14-17 in the packet. Classes continued work on their respective POGIL activities. Pds. 1, 4, & 8 used spectroscopes to observe the emission spectra produced by mercury in fluorescent light fixtures and a hydrogen gas spectrum tube. Pd. 2 discussed the factors affecting Coulombic Attraction and completed the POGIL activity packet.
HW Continue preparations for Friday's quiz and next Tuesday's test. I was out today, so students began work in small groups on the next POGIL activity. Pds. 1, 4, & 8 started Electron Energy & Light, while Pd. 2 began Coulombic Attraction.
After reviewing the relationships between wavelength and frequency, we worked several practice problems that utilized the speed of light equation and the wave energy equation. Unfinished problems from the worksheet are to be completed by students as needed until they feel comfortable working with these calculations.
There will be a quiz on Friday on calculations dealing with average atomic mass as well as the light equations. Unit test on the Atom (historical development, atomic structure, isotopes, average atomic mass, light and Coulombic attraction) will be on Tuesday (11/22) before break. PhET Isotopes & Average Atomic Mass wrap-up; we focused on the last page of the packet in particular to understand how a qualitative prediction of the average atomic mass can be made by examining the percent abundances of each isotope. We defined average atomic mass as the weighted average of an elements' isotope masses based on their relative abundances. Students were then provided with a sheet of practice calculations to reinforce their understanding.
