AP Day 23

9/30/2016

We began by reviewing practice calculations involving characteristics of light...wavelength, frequency, & energy...and constants such as the speed of light (c=3.0x10^8 m/s) and Planck's constant (h=6.626x10^-34 J s).  Next, students worked through the first half of the "Electron Energy & Light" POGIL activity, before rounding out our abbreviated double period (pep rally cut our second period short) by performing flame tests to identify an unknown metal ion in solution.

AP Day 22

9/29/2016

Today started with the Unit 2 Quiz #1 focusing on Isotopes & Atomic Structure.  Following this assessment, students completed the POGIL activity on Mass Spectroscopy.

The concept of radioactivity, starting with Becquerel's accidental discovery and Curie's naming of the phenomena, we also characterized the three main types of nuclear radiation (alpha, beta & gamma) (p. 45-46, CSS13e)

Tomorrow: Topic of the day is Light...we will start with calculations involving light and energy, complete a POGIL activity dealing with light and electron behavior, and wrap-up with collecting data for Lab 4, Flame Tests.

AP Day 21

Calculations to determine average atomic mass given isotopic abundance information, as well as determining isotopic abundance of isotopes given the element's average atomic mass and individual isotope masses were demonstrated and practiced.  Students then completed a POGIL activity introducing concepts of Mass Spectroscopy, as well as viewed a model illustrating the mass spectroscopy principle.
