AP Day 62

We reviewed questions from the MasteringChemistry assignment and Labs 11 & 12.  Most students submitted these before leaving at the end of the period, others by the end of the day.  We discussed the format of tomorrow's unit exam (30 MC, 2 FRQ [1 shorter, 1 longer]) and the topics to examine:
  • Naming and writing chemical formulas...ionic, molecular, acids (and bases)
  • The "anatomy" of a chemical equation...reactants, products, "yield" arrow, subscripted states, coefficients
  • Types of chemical equations...skeleton, balanced, molecular, ionic, net ionic
  • Types of reactions...single displacement (cationic & anionic), double displacement, synthesis, decomposition, combustion
  • Predicting products...know the 4 general decomposition reactions we discussed...solubility rules & standard reduction potentials will be available if needed.
  • Balancing equations
  • Oxidation-reduction reactions...determining charges on elements, identifying what is oxidized or reduced, writing half-reactions, combining half-reactions by cancelling electrons
We then took a quiz on predicting single displacement reactions using standard reduction potentials and went over the answers afterward.  Students wrapped up the period by starting a POGIL activity "Relative Mass & the Mole" as a lead-in to our next unit.
