We continued our discussion of lab safety, including the importance of eye protection and how to operate a fire extinguisher (see videos below). We also began our orientation to lab equipment. There will be an assessment on lab safety & lab equipment identification on Tuesday, 9/5.
Below is a video I like to show...a good summary of lab safety in a cinema-style presentation. Lots of parallels to the information found in our safety contract.
Students submitted their Summer Assignments and took their Element Symbols & Common Ions Quizzes today. We discussed the syllabus and test schedule (tentative dates are already posted to the Google calendar) and looked at working in a team environment. The rest of the week looks like this:
Today we discussed how to interpret titration curves...telling what was being titrated (SA/WA/SB/WB), what combination of S/W analyte & titrant were being used (based on pH at the equivalence point), buffers and how to calculate the pH of a buffer solution (see the online practice at http://www.sciencegeek.net/Activities/Buffers-Composition.html ) We also described the half-equivalence method for determining the pKa of a weak acid.
Unit 12 Test is tomorrow. Check the blog for assignment to be completed for Thursday. |
This area will contain an overview of what was discussed/performed each day in class. Archives
