We wrapped up discussion of Lab 8 - Intermolecular forces and polarity with a discussion of how intermolecular forces play a role in physical properties of liquids like surface tension, vapor pressure and boiling point. Students then used the Types of Solids POGIL activity to investigate the relationship between the type of solid (ionic, molecular, network covalent, or metallic) and the properties (fundamental unit makeup, melting point, enthalpy of fusion, solubility and conductivity) it exhibits. This activity will serve as a good resource for students as they develop a procedure for identifying an unknown solid based on its observed properties in Lab 9.
