Students constructed a distillation apparatus and completed a distillation experiment where they separated the 2 primary components of a liquid mixture. Students will have some time in class Thursday to work on their report and the due date will be Friday by the end of the day. Summer assignments were also returned and we began reviewing the solutions/areas of common mistakes associated with these assignments.
After reviewing classification of matter, we discussed changes to matter, both chemical & physical. We then discussed and gave examples of chemical and physical properties, as well as the difference between extensive and intensive physical properties. This led to a conversation of how to separate mixtures, and what properties lent themselves to different separation techniques. Tomorrow's lab will deal with separating a simple binary liquid mixture using distillation. In preparation for this, students were introduced to the Flinn Scientific SDS Search tool, and we worked together to set up the Chemical Data Table (CDT) that they will incorporate into their lab report.
Reminder for tomorrow...wear proper footwear! After wrapping up the Organizing Data POGIL from Friday, the MasteringChemistry homework and Quizlet review deck were introduced. A small group discussion of how to classify matter followed, with a pair of reinforcement activities at the end
