After reviewing the results of Friday's measuring activity, students took a mid-unit quiz on measurements, sig figs and conversions. This was followed with a discussion of sig fig use in calculations, as well as density and percent error calculations.
The following PhET Simulation can be used for practice in solving for the various quantities represented in the Density equation (D, m & V). The Mystery section challenges you to determine what material each block is made of, based on measured masses & volumes and provided reference values. Lab 2 (Separation of a Homogenous Mixture by Distillation) reports turned in. We reviewed the assigned EDpuzzle videos on making measurements and then students worked through a POGIL activity on Significant Figures. We wrapped up the discussion with a station activity where students practiced reading various instruments as accurately and precisely as possible.
Due to a family obligation, I was not in the classroom today; however, thanks to video conferencing, we were still able to hold class. We reviewed the use of equivalent values & conversion factors in dimensional analysis (factor-label method of problem solving), and solved conversion problems involving metric-English unit conversions as well as squared & cubed units. Remaining time was used to work on Lab 2 report (due tomorrow) and/or the Unit 1 MasteringChemistry Homework.
